DARKSIDE – One Last Nothing

DARKSIDE pull one more track from the Nothing sessions and it’s everything that made that album work. “One Last Nothing” builds around a bass line that drives the whole thing forward. Nicolás Jaar, Dave Harrington, and Tlacael Esparza lock into a groove that blends krautrock’s repetition, dub’s space, and psychedelia’s drift.

Esparza’s drums anchor the track, while live percussion adds texture. Organs shift between lush swells and sharp percussive hits. Guitars drone in the background. The bass pops and moves. Jaar’s falsetto vocals float through without demanding attention. Each element has room, but nothing feels sparse.

The production stays loose and live. Nothing cleaned up too much. After founding the band as a duo in 2013 with Psychic and following up with Spiral in 2021, Jaar and Harrington brought Esparza into the group as a full member for Nothing. He’s also an instrument designer, and his drumming shifts the band’s foundation.

Where Psychic and Spiral came from scattered ideas moulded in the studio, Nothing grew out of improvised jams and acoustic experiments. You can hear that process in “One Last Nothing.” It moves but doesn’t rush. Stays hypnotic without losing its edge.
